Scavenging abilities of animal sera against six reactive species (OH, O2−, RO, t-BuOO, H3C, and 1O2) were determined with the use of multiple free-radical scavenging (MULTIS) method. Commercially available sera from pig, horse, rabbit, Guinea pig, hamster and chicken were subjected to MULTIS analysis and the results were compared with human specimen. In general, animal sera showed lower scavenging ability against OH and RO radicals than human serum. However, it is noteworthy that rabbit and chicken sera have higher scavenging ability against O2− than others. This is consistent with the known data that superoxide dismutase levels in these sera are high. In addition, we determined the uric acid level in animal sera using the uricase-TOOS method. In chicken serum, uric acid was found to be the major effective component in RO scavenging. This paper is first to quantitatively evaluate antioxidant capacities in animal sera. 相似文献
Background: Invasive fungal infections are a major threat to a large cohort of immunocompromised patients, including patients with chemotherapy-associated neutropenia. Early differential diagnosis with bacterial infections is often complicated, which leads to a delay in empirical antifungal therapy and increases risk for adverse outcome. Accessibility and performance of specific fungal antigen and PCR-tests are still limited, while sepsis biomarkers are more broadly used in most settings currently.
Methods: Haematological patients hospitalized to receive chemotherapy with proven or probable invasive fungal infection or microbiologically proven bacterial bloodstream infection were included in the study. C-reactive protein was assessed daily during the profound neutropenia period, while procalcitonin or presepsin were measured during the first 48?hours after the onset of febrile episode.
Results: There were totally 64 patients included in the study, 53 with bacterial bloodstream infections and 11 with invasive fungal infections. Combination of CRP >120 with PCT <1.25 or presepsin <170 was shown to be a possible combined biomarker for invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, with areas under the ROC-curves: 0.962 (95% CI 0.868 to 0.995) for PCT-based combination and 0.907 (95% CI 0.692 to 0.990) for presepsin-based combination. 相似文献
The aim of this study was to carry out a comparison of the ability to discriminate between extreme chronotypes, i.e., morning- and evening-types, among the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and its reduced version (rMEQ). To this end a secondary analysis of cohort studies, using two different approaches, was carried out. The first, subjective, relied on the computing of overlap between extreme chronotypes according to their hourly ideal bedtime, get-up time and midpoint of sleep reported at the MEQ and rMEQ, while the second, objective, on the corresponding actual-actigraphic times. At the subjective approach, 2706 participants filled in the MEQ, while 940 the rMEQ (age range of both groups: 18–30 years). The overlap was significantly lower among those who filled the rMEQ than MEQ when considering ideal midpoint of sleep (13.70% and 46.28%, respectively) and get-up time (47.04% and 62.34%, respectively). At the objective approach, 51 participants filled in the MEQ while 52 the rMEQ (age range: 19–30 years in both groups) at the end of one week of actigraphic recording. No significantly different overlap across those who filled the MEQ or rMEQ was observed with reference to the examined actigraphic times. Results of subjective assessment showed as rMEQ more clearly discriminated between extreme chronotypes than MEQ. The attempt to find an objective confirmation did not provide the same results, probably as a consequence of a masking effect by social rhythms. 相似文献
ABSTRACTChromolaena odorata (L.) R.M. King and H. Robinson (Asteraceae) is a perennial weedy shrub of neotropical origin and a serious biotic threat in its invasive range. The Asian-West Africa (AWA) biotype of C. odorata present in West Africa is both morphologically and genetically different from the southern African (SA) biotype. The AWA biotype was first introduced into Nigeria in the late 1930s and rapidly spread across West Africa. Currently, 12 of the 16 countries in West Africa have been invaded, with significant negative effects on indigenous flora and fauna. However, locals in West Africa have found several uses for the weed. As chemical, physical and other conventional methods were unsustainable, costly and largely ineffective, three biological control agents, Apion brunneonigrum (Coleoptera: Brentidae), Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) and Cecidochares connexa (Diptera: Tephritidae), have been released in West Africa between the 1970s and the early 2000s. However, only C. connexa and P. pseudoinsulata established, contributing to the control of the weed, in six and four countries in West Africa respectively. Limited research funding, the absence of post-release evaluations of the established agents, and the ‘conflict of interest’ status of C. odorata (i.e. being beneficial for local use but damaging to ecosystem services and agriculture), are serious factors deterring the overall biological control effort. Here, using historical records and field surveys, we examine the invasion history, spread, impacts, and management of C. odorata in West Africa and make recommendations for the sustainable management of C. odorata in the region. 相似文献
